Who looks up to you?
My name is Katey Rentz and I am the Decibel Kids Director. Think back with me to when you were 18, 12, 9 or even 5 years old. For some this may be easier than others but I would bet the majority of us could name at least one person who invested in us and helped shape us into the person we are today. It may have been a teacher who simply believed in you and knew that you could do better, a coach that pushed you and shaped you into a great athlete, or even a youth or children’s leader that challenged you every Sunday to be the light in your world.
For me when I reflect back on the people that invested in me I am brought to tears. I have been fortunate to have many people that have believed in me and invested in me but two people specifically come to mind. They were my youth pastors from the time I was 14 years old to the time I graduated high school. They invested in me like no other. They pointed out what was great in me that I couldn’t see, they challenged me to be the best version of myself, and they loved me unconditionally when I wasn’t . But let me take it a step further, not only was I lucky enough to have these awesome people pouring into me but they challenged me to pay it forward. As a high school student they challenged me to become a leader for middle school girls...
The second I started to pour myself into girls who were looking up to me my life changed immensely. No longer was I living for myself but I was living for them. I knew that there was a group of middle school girls looking up to me, looking to see how I interacted with the world, with friends, and with the struggles we all face. You can sum this whole experience with this quote: “When you begin to live you life for others, you begin to live differently”. When I realized that this life was no longer about me but about God and others my world was never the same.
John 15:12-13 says, This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(NLT) Who are you laying your life down for, who are you investing in?
For the mom who is on the other side of motherhood, you have the greatest opportunity to find a young mom who is just starting out. Take her to coffee and tell her the things that you wished people would have said to you when you were in her shoes. Men, young boys these days are in desparate need of strong male influences in their lives, jump into Decibel Kids or Decibel Students and find those boys who just need a father figure that will look at them and tell them they are great and they will do great things. Students, pour into those behind you by simply just being a good friend. My point is that no matter where you sit in life right now we all can invest in someone and we all have the influence to change someone’s life.
My challenge to you is to find at least one person to truly invest in. Take them to coffee, do what they like to do, build a relationship that is so strong that when the time is needed you can look at them and say things others may not be able to. You can’t afford not too, I want your life to explode just like mine did, I want your journey with God to be all that it can be. So find that person and start investing in them and watch how your life will change.
